Saturnia

Saturnia is a spa town and district of the municipality Manciano in the Tuscan Maremma (Italy).

Geography

The place is located about 8 km north of the main town Manciano and Albegnatal and in the southern Maremma. The provincial capital Grosseto located 38 kilometers north-west. The village lies at 294 meters above sea level on the Via Clodia and has about 280 inhabitants. Saturnia is located on a hill above the confluence of Albegna and stellata.

History

According to legend, the Saturnia is to be the first self- founded city on the Italian peninsula of Saturn - hence the name Saturnia. The Saturnia itself is located on a travertine and is considered the first Etruscan city of Italy. Before the Etruscans already settled here, Villa Nova. Parts of the city walls date from the 2nd century BC, when the Romans were on site. The presence of the Romans is suspected since 280 BC, when they were established under the name Tures here. Between the 3rd and 12th centuries the place left no other traces.

First mentioned in writing in 1188 the place is in a document of Pope Clement III. ( Pope ). At this time, the spa and the Rocca were already present. The Rocca succeeded in 1216 in the possession of the Aldobrandeschi and was in conflict field of Siena and Orvieto, both tried to occupy the place ( 1221 Siena, Orvieto 1251 ). Siena destroyed the place considerably in 1299 in search of Margherita Aldobrandeschi. The expansion of the Roman city walls of Siena held from 1454 to 1464.

After the defeat of the Senese Republic Saturnia came to the Medici, the place in 1593 bequeathed to the Margrave Ximenes. The Panciatichi family ruled from 1738 to 1751. 1787 was Saturnia district of Manciano.
