SBB-CFF-FFS Re 420

The Re 4/4II or Re 420 are universal locomotives of the SBB and accordingly come from all categories of passenger trains as well as freight trains. Heavy trains are transported in double traction, heavy freight trains often together with Re 6 / 6th

The Re 4/4II with 277 locomotives delivered the largest ever train series in Switzerland. The Re 4/4II was built from 1964 to 1985 for 21 years and put into circulation.

All locomotives are equipped with multiple unit control VST IIId.

Prehistory

With the advent of the Ae 6 /6 on the Gotthard a fast and powerful locomotive for express trains was available. On other routes this train category was often in the hands of the Ae 4 / 7th Disadvantage proved to be the low top speed of 100 km / h and the inability to operate in the Zugreihe R with higher cornering speeds. On the other hand, the light locomotives Re 4/4I and set in operation since 1959 RBe 4/4 were challenged with heavy express trains to the limit.

Therefore, the SBB attributed the development of a universal locomotive which could be with the BB wheel arrangement on the entire route network used with Zugreihe R from. The consortium SLM / BBC / MFO / SAAS won the tender and responded to the demands with six beefy prototypes, which were similar to the Ae 6/6 in the design.

The 80 -ton vehicle with a power of 4700 kW met the expectations of the customer. The locomotives were initially set with the label Bo'Bo ' in operation. Until then, drive vehicles with an axle load exceeding 16 tonnes from admission were excluded for Zugreihe R. After extensive test drives this approval was granted but the locomotives and designated as Re 4/4II. ( As a result, then the Ae 4/4II the BLS Re 4/4 could be redrawn ). In railway circles the name BoBo remained liable for a long time.

Construction

Mechanical Design

The Re 4/4II is a four-axle, four-engine locomotive on two bogies. The wheel sets are supported by coil springs on the bogie frame. The bogie is secondary (originally rubber springs ) supported deeply attached to the locomotive body with coil springs.

The tensile force is transmitted via Tiefzugstangen of the bogies to the locomotive body.

To provide a better curve entrance of the trailing bogie, an elastic cross coupling has been installed between the two bogies.

Electrical Construction

The Re 4/4II has a classic step switch control with control to the high voltage side of the transformer and four AC motors. The braking power of the motors can be recuperated.

The prototype 11206 was equipped in accordance with the Re 4/4 BLS with rectifiers, operated the motors as wave -current motors. The tension increased only insignificantly, so the project was not pursued and the vehicle adapted to the other.

Related locomotives

The Re 4/4III differs from the Re 4/4II from in that they have a different mechanical translation, which is the maximum speed to 125 km / h limited. You have this 4/4II a higher hourly tensile force of 200 kN to 170 kN of Re. A locomotive was delivered in 1967 to the Swiss South-East Railway (SOB ) ( Re 4/4 41) and also tested in sequence on the Gotthard. The SBB 1971 took twenty pieces in operation, of which three locomotives were sold from 1983 to 1985 at the SOB. All four machines went SOB 1994-1996 ( again ) to the SBB and the SOB was in Abtausch the four pendelzugfähigen Re 4/4IV-Prototypen. Five Re 4/4III-Lokomotiven were procured from the EBT - group they belong today than 436 re Crossrail AG.

Similarly, in the mechanical construction as well as in the optical impression of the Ge 4/4II the Rhaetian Railway.

Prototypes

The prototype locomotives ( 11101-11106, 11201-11206 originally ) have only a pantograph on (originally pantograph ), and initially had on the side walls no white trim (analog Ae 6 /6). In the prototypes, so the lettering SBB -CFF -FFS and SBB is mounted on the side wall lower down than the regular production. In addition, the three windows are smaller and closer together than the regular production in the side wall.

1st series

The locomotives of the first production series ( 11107-11155 ) show how the prototype to only one pantograph, however, are 10 cm longer than the prototype.

2nd series

The locomotives of the second series ( 11156-11349 and 11371-11397 ) have two pantographs and with 15'410 mm (at the same bogie spacing ) half a meter longer than the locomotives of the first series. The end walls of the locomotives of the second series are somewhat more inclined than those of the first series.

Quite correctly, there is a second series of several sub-series, which but not of the first series (Except for the translation of the Re 4 /4 III ) differed. Instead of 2 to 6 series is also spoken 3 to 7 order tranche. The second series (3rd order from 1966 /67) includes the locomotives 11156-11215. The third series (4th order of 1968) of the Re 4 /4 II 11216-11254 and Re 4 /4 III 11351-11370. The fourth series (5th order of 1970) includes 11255-11304. Each of the second and third series followed the orders of the connection MThB and EBT group. The fifth series (6th order of 1979) includes 11305-11349. The sixth series (7th order of 1981) includes 11371-11397. The 5th and 6th series were delivered only after an interruption between 1981 and 1984.

Variants and conversions

Rangierausführung

  • Re 4/4II 11101

This engine was fitted in 2006 with a fine speedometer ( 0-40 km / h) and ( car wash, etc. ) used in Basel in the maintenance facility for the shunting of trains. It is the last prototype locomotive, which belongs to the SBB. You can continue to be used for the route service because it is equipped with ZUB and ETM.

  • Re 4/4II 11120

This machine like the 11101, provided in December 2007, for Verschubdienste in the maintenance facility Basel with fine speedometer. They also reserves ZUB, ETM and approval for distance use.

Swiss Express locomotives

  • Re 4/4II 11103, 11106, 11108, 11109, 11112, 11113, 11133, 11141

For the guide that came with automatic clutch Swiss Express trains had to be adapted a number of locomotives. Although the locomotives of the later series were (from 11220, but without 11236-38 ) prepared at the factory to accommodate the UIC coupling; but as these were not yet at the relevant time available, some locos had to be rebuilt specifically for the Swiss-Express. They were given an extended push bar, new clutches, along with the matching paint in the Swiss Express - colors - orange stone gray -orange. In addition, they carry instead of the Swiss cross the then newly introduced SBB Signet. Following the adoption of the standard wagon III for commuter trains normal screw couplings were mounted at the ends of the compositions. As a result, normal tow hitch could be mounted on the locomotive again.

On the occasion of larger revisions locomotives 11112, 11113 and 11133 received a red paint; No. 11103 and 11106 were taken from the BLS and painted in silver -blue-green. 11141 Swiss Express kept the paint and was beginning of October 2007 and has since been used as a heating engine off. After a major investigation in Bellinzona, the machine is since autumn 2009 in the red livery of the series back in action. The machines 11108 and 09 are still with orange paint in operation. The units 11109 and 11112, it was decided that due major revision no longer run; While they remain in the active inventory, are used primarily for back-up service.

Lindau locomotives

  • Re 4/4II 11195-11200, 11196-11201 originally ( 1969-2006 )

In order to promote the fast trains and later Euro City trains Zurich -Munich without changing locomotives to Lindau, six locomotives with a wide pantograph range according to the DB / ÖBB standard feature. To prevent these projects into Switzerland to gauge, had a pantograph with chain drive, which can be lowered particularly deep, are used. These locomotives, no Austrian command is built, they could therefore only be used under special conditions to other Austrian and German routes. Once equipped with an inductive magnet Re 421 have taken the traction of the EC trains of SBB Cargo, the six Re 420 were normalized to 2006.

Re 421

The Re 421 caused by remodeling of the latest series of re 4/4II and registered in Germany. To this end, they received the German command inductive magnet and a current collector with a wider rocker according to German regulations. However, this pantograph limits the maximum speed ( in Germany ) to 120 km / h The wheel sets ( with tyred ) could only be released after an additional approval process for 140 km / h in Germany. One such operation would have to be disproportionately expensive, especially since a Vmax of 120 km / h for freight transport operations entirely sufficient. The 26 Re 421 371 ... 397 (not 382) include SBB Cargo and are mainly used by SBB Cargo Germany, some are leased to the passenger, who begins before Euro City trains Zurich - Munich. Between St.Margrethen and the head station Lindau they pass under overhead line and command by ÖBB- norm, which coincides with the German functional specifications.

The conversion for use in Germany was limited to the Re 4/4II the latest series because the producers assured the the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA ) demanded asbestos freedom only these locomotives.

Preparations for approval in Germany had begun in 1999.

TEE locomotives

  • Re 4/4II 11158-11161 11249-11253 and

Some Re 4/4II were provided with a TEE paint for the cover of TEA Lokzügen. Mainly, these coloring urged for trainsets with creamy burgundy red wagon, DB (TEE Helvetia and Roland ) and the FS (TEE Lemano ); However, known by the nickname " Cream Cake » Machinery garnered the silver-colored French INOX cars of the TEE Cisalpin. The locomotives are not required for TEE trains were used liberally to other services.

Coat of Arms Locomotive

  • Re 4/4II 11239

As the only SBB Re 4/4II owns the locomotive 11239 a municipal coat of arms, namely that of Porrentruy. She inherited it from the Ae 6/6 11483 that rose after the founding of the Canton of Jura on the " Städtelok Porrentruy " to " Kantonslok Jura ".

Radio remote control locomotives Ref 4/4II

The equipped with a supply station for radio remote control of SBB Re 460 locomotives carry a small 'f' in the model designation. This mode never came, however, from the experimental stage and has been the delivery of all Re 460 to the passenger in any case no longer possible.

ETCS equipment

For the ETCS test operation on the route Zofingen Sempach (2001-2003, fully operational from April 2002 to November 2003 ), the locomotives were 11265-11298 (excl. already discarded 11282 ) ETCS on-board equipment, Bombardier and a white on the peak standing triangle below the side windows.

The now (2 ETCS level ) operating on new lines equipped for the regular with Alstom - vehicle devices locomotives are not specially marked, except, but still carry the units of the experimental operation, all of the series model were technically aligned with the triangle part.

Air conditioning

A first attempt began in May 1993. During the Re 4 /4 II 11218 were built on the roofs over the cabs cab air-conditioning units. However, it remained at this loner. The air conditioners were later removed.

For another experiment, it was 2002. From Bellinzona on the Re 4 /4 II 11160 behind every driver's seat ( in engine room ) an air conditioner were installed. One side wall of the engine room additionally obtained a service door. In September 2003, followed by the Re 4 /4 II 11162, 11242 and 11386th After satisfactory test results, the Board of Directors of SBB approved in July 2004 a loan of 60 million francs. With this credit, all Re 420 and Re 430 to be fitted with a cab air conditioning. From mid-2006 already the hundredth air conditioning in the Biel was installed. The Re 421 will get no air conditioning, because otherwise they would have to go through the authorization process in Germany again.

Modernization program LION

For the needs of the Zurich S -Bahn 2011-2016 30 machines SBB Passenger ( 11201-11230 ) in SBB Bellinzona works to be renewed. They receive multiple unit control Vst 6c (in addition to existing IIId ), a 18-pin UIC line, a new wiring with fire retardant material, new battery chargers, speed measuring systems of the type Hasler TELOC 1500 cab displays and speed indicators of the type Hasler SPEEDO. Externally visible are the new LED headlights, rectangular buffers (of the Re 460, the pantograph type Faiveley AX receive ), the deleted chrome letters "SBB -CFF " or " CFF FFS " and WBL -85- pantograph the new color scheme, which is similar to that of the Re 460. In the Zurich S -Bahn they will be used from December 2011 in double traction on the head and end of double-deck trains to 6 or 10 also renewed carriages for additional trains in the rush hour.

Change of ownership and scrapped locomotives

Sale to BLS

Six of the Re 420 were sold to the BLS in December 2004 and run there as Re 420 501 and Re 420 506 There were the green 11110, 11117, 11119, 11123, 11137 and 11142nd the end of 2005 a further six machines were sold to the BLS, the 11107 and the prototypes 11102-11106. They ran at the BLS as Re 420 507 and 508-512. Since the end of 2009 Re 420507-512 are no longer used. With Re 420 510 (formerly SBB Re 4 /4 II 11104 ) was scrapped in February 2010 in Emmen, the first machine that was not badly damaged by a fire or accident damage. In June 2010, the remaining five locomotives were also scrapped in Emmen, so now the former 11102-07 are gone. In January 2013, the re were 420 503 and 506 TRAVYS and MBC, where they kept their numbers.

Ausrangierungen and purchases from the MThB

So far, six locomotives had to be scrapped due to an accident. The Re 4/4 21 of the former Mittelthurgaubahn passed into the possession of the SBB and given the number of discarded 11172nd

11113 ( scrapped 2004)

The locomotive 11113 led on 24 October 2003 to train 1629 collided in the Oerlikon train station by train in 2583. The locomotive was damaged so badly that a repair was no longer profitable. After approval by the investigating authorities of the locomotive body was transferred and scrapped after Kaiseraugst.

11172 ( scrapped 1978)

Locomotive 11172 drove on Friday, December 8th, 1978 at Vaumarcus with a freight train on a stationary signal before another freight train on. The locomotive was doing so badly damaged that only their phasing could be placed by December 1978. The number 11172 was 21 adopted in 2003 by the former MThB Re 4/4II, serial number Moderately between the locomotives 11215 and 11216 located.

11282 ( scrapped 1975)

The Re 4 /4 " 11282 led with T2S sleeping car for the DB test drives 160 km / h between Chur and Landquart through. During a journey from Chur on Thursday, October 30, 1975 the brake valves were not opened. Contrary to the rules was the test train set the entry signal. with the braking force of the engine alone could the train can not be stopped, he bounced into a run of the Ae 4/7 10906 freight train with tank cars which crossed his track. , the only two years old locomotive burned out and was in December 1975 officially scrapped.

11312 ( scrapped 1985)

The locomotive 11312 collided on Saturday, September 14th, 1985 at Bussigny, between Renens and Denges, after driving through a red signal, with the two multiply- controlled Ae 4/7 10940 and 11011th After assessing the damage to the only four-year loco they had in October 1985 will be formally scrapped.

11323 ( scrapped 2005)

In the 23rd March 2005, the locomotive burned down due to a technical defect in Arth -Goldau. It was officially scrapped in July and transferred to the locomotive body in the second last week of August to Kaiseraugst for scrapping.

11382 ( scrapped 2002)

After a fire in the Leventina on 31 January 2002 in July 2002 scrapped.

Scrapping of the first series

11141 Swiss- Express paint was scrapped in October 2007 and initially used as Heizlokomotive. Since autumn 2009, the locomotive is back in action. In the investigation in Bellinzona, she received the SBB red livery of the other series.

Allocation for freight and passenger

With the divisional structure as of 1 September 1999, the locomotives 11101-155, 181, 191-270 and 299-304 went to the Passenger Division, 11156-171, 11173-180, 11182-190, 11271-298, 11305-311, 11313 - 349 and 11371-397 in the division freight. The end of 2002 was 11172 " ex MThB to inventory passenger, a year later, 11225-264 SBB Cargo are to be overwritten. Late 2004 were exchanged for 11225-230 11265-270 and six locomotives ( numbers above) sold to the BLS. Went end of 2005. 11102-107 to the BLS and it came 11156-159, 161 and 164 of cargo to passenger Thus, the current inventory:

  • Passenger ( shunting Basel): 11101 and 11120
  • Passenger: 11108 ... 159 (44 pieces), 161, 164, 172, 181, 191-230, 299-304
