Schloßstraße (Berlin U-Bahn)

Metro Station Castle Street is a Metro Station, on line U9 of the Berlin U -Bahn in Steglitz- Zehlendorf district of Steglitz. The built 1971-1973 station is located below the castle road between Schildhornstraße and Carpenter Street. In the immediate vicinity of the tower restaurant Bierpinsel, the mall Boulevard Berlin as well as the Rosary Basilica. The station was opened on 30 September 1974.

History and Structure

The station was designed as an interchange station between the U9 and U10 line of the planned and built due to restricted space with two superimposed central platforms. At the top platform rail vehicles should depart in northern, at the lower station platform in a southerly direction and allow a unidirectional transfer at the same platform. Since the U10 was not realized, only the eastern side of the station platform will be used by the U9 respectively. The western sides are separated by a fence from the passenger traffic; in the track trough unused tracks are laid without power rail.

The station was designed by the architectural firm Student & Witte, which also designed the Bierpinsel and the ICC. He has three levels - a distributor level and two platform levels, which are interconnected to each other by stairs and escalators. The design is typical of the seventies: In the platform halls, there are blue, yellow and orange - red wall elements. The ceilings are predominantly carried out in concrete; the distribution level and the stairwells are decorated or tiled in dark blue-green.

The metro station is about two entrances at the north and south end on each of several staircases on both sides of the castle road distance. In addition, the distributor level in the north is connected directly to the Boulevard Berlin and the business House Castle Road 110.

From late 2014 until approximately 2017, the metro station is fully refurbished and modernized. Here, the lower platform to be closed, so that the trains will stop in both directions at the top of the platform. For the conversion, according to BVG business plan 13.8 million euros are provided, Senate Department for Urban Development and Transport plans with a cost of 11.9 million euros.

At the metro station is a transfer possibility of the U9 to several bus lines of the Berlin Transport Authority.
