History

Schmatzfeld was mentioned in documents for the first time on July 26, 1259 as Smatvelde. The document is about a land acquisition of Count Gebhard I of Wernigerode, of which there were two of these pieces of land at Schmatzfeld. An uncovered in 1984 medieval cemetery with 30 burials in the period of 13th and 14th century, suggests that in the church was a church and the place had reached a certain size. In 1471, however, the village was referred to as the left, which is likely related to a Wüstungsperiode in the Middle Ages.

At the end of the 15th century was built on the territory of the abandoned village a Vorwerk of the Counts of Stolberg- Wernigerode, which quickly gained economic importance.

The so-called domain Schmatzfeld was up for sale in 1930, the largest agricultural commodity in the former county of Wernigerode.

After settler families founded 44 Homesteads, which partially very well-run farms matured during the second third of the 20th century. These farms were the basis of the local LPG, which still exists today as an agricultural cooperative Bundschuh.

On January 1, 2010, the formerly independent communities Schmatzfeld, Danstedt, Heudeber, Langeln, Abbenrode, Stapelburg, Veckenstedt and aquatic life merged to form a unified community Nordharz.
