Scipio (cognomen)

Scipio (Latin, "stick", plural: Scipiones ) was the surname ( cognomen ) of the most famous branch of the Roman patrician family of the Cornelii that goes back probably to the Cornelii Malugenses. In particular, during the Punic wars against Carthage, several members of the family made ​​a big name. At the end of the Republic Cornelii Scipiones went on in the Cornelii Lentuli, which is also the cognomen Scipio revived in the Imperial period.

Her famous family grave was located on the Via Appia outside the Porta Capena, where their bodies were buried in sarcophagi unburned in underground chambers. This grave was found in 1614 and 1780 completely uncovered (publication of Giovanni Battista Piranesi ). The finds of inscriptions, sarcophagi and statuary came mostly in the Vatican Museums; the oldest Africanus is said to have erected a bust of the poet Ennius eg there.
