Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus

Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus (birth name: Seán Loftus ) ( born November 1, 1927 in Dublin, † July 10, 2010 ) was an Irish environmental activist, politician and 1995-1996 Lord Mayor of Dublin (Lord Mayor of Dublin).

Biography

After attending the Coláiste Mhuire, a teachers' college, he studied law at University College Dublin and was once approved by the King's Inns as a lawyer ( barrister ) active, while specializing in particular town planning law. Later he was also also a lecturer in law at Dublin Institute of Technology.

In 1961, he was the founder of the Christian Democrat Movement of Ireland and was a candidate in the general election in the same year for the first time in the constituency of Dublin North East, but without success.

After serving as an environmental activist to preserve Dublin Bay, he changed his name to Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus. He sat down against oil refineries, natural gas underground caverns and other influences one of the bay. In the 1970s, he campaigned for the preservation of the Wood Quay.

In the 1973 general election he stood as a candidate in the constituency of Dublin North Central again and appeared on the electoral list with his new name.

In 1974 he was first elected as a member of the City Council of Dublin ( Dublin City Council ), and was this the next 25 years to 1999. On June 18, 1979, he ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin, but it reached only 4 votes and thus subject to Eugene Timmons, who received 13 votes, and William Cumiskey, who was elected by 27 votes to the Lord Mayor.

In the elections of 1981 ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), he was finally elected a deputy and took there the interests of the constituency of Dublin North East. However, not managed to defend his seat in Parliament at the shortly afterwards held early elections in February 1982, although he was a candidate not only in the constituency of Dublin North East, but also in Dublin North Central. Nevertheless, he ran until 1997 over again without success for a seat in Dáil Éireann.

As the successor to John Gormley 1995, he was for a one-year term Lord Mayor of Dublin.

In 1999 he founded Dublin Bay Watch, an association for the defense of Dublin Bay.
