Selbitz (river)

The Selbitz Look at stone.

The Selbitz is a 36.6 km long, orographic left tributary of the Saale in the eastern Franconian Forest and is considered waters of third order.

The origin of the name Selbitz is not known, but is probably of Slavic origin, possibly derived from Zilovica ( root: zila or Zyla ) from and would therefore as much as mean streak. But appears also possible the derivation of Zelvica ( root zelwja or Zelva ), which means turtle. As Appelativum this occurs in weststslavischen place and field names.

Geography

The Selbitz rises to about 650 meters above sea level from a pond northwest of the hamlet Helmbrechtser Wüstenselbitz, Helmbrechts wraps around only in the east, then north. Later it touches the cities look stone, Selbitz and Naila, before flowing through the up to 170 meters deep into the Diabasgestein cut Höllentalbahn between hell and sheet Schmidt hammer.

In the village of Hell (part of Naila ) is located on the left bank of a Selbitz drilled in 262 meters depth mineral source ( hell bubble ). In Höllentalbahn the Selbitz is dammed. A large part of its water is tapped to operate a power plant via a pipe. At the power plant on the river shore, the water flows back into the river. Between the mouth of the Thuringian Muschwitz at the output of Hollental and her own mouth into the Saale near Blankenstein the Selbitz forms at about two kilometers, the border between Bavaria and Thuringia, the pedestrian walkway between the Bavarian hamlet Unter Eichenstein and Blankenstein is regarded as the end point of the Thuringian Rennsteig.

On its 36.6 km long road which Selbitz overcomes a difference in altitude of 236 meters, which corresponds to an average bed slope of 6.4 ‰.

At almost any point in the level of Selbitz can rise theoretically, since it is mostly surrounded by meadows and in the urban area Naila flows between the station and the bridge near the football field in a natural, but realigned valley, which allows the river, in Tauzeiten or storms and heavy showers to swell to more than twice the width. From 2 to 4 December 2007, this could once again be observed. In this area of the river, he is surrounded by grass strips left and right, which are used in the snowless seasons as pasture for sheep.
