Selvena

Selvena is a district of Castell'Azzara in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The city is located 5 kilometers west of the capital Castell'Azzara and 55 km east of the provincial capital Grosseto. The village lies at 658 meters above sea level in the immediate vicinity and south of Mount Amiata and east of the river Fiora (about 1 km) and has about 580 inhabitants. To the west is bordered Cellena ( today part of Semproniano ) to Selvena.

History

First mentioned in writing the place was 873 in June and 874 in May as Casale Silbina and Vico Silbina than Chiusi and Sovana the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata ceded territories. In this field the later Rocca Silvana was born. The present town originated from the scattered houses that were outside of the castle Borghi and Borghetto ( first mentioned on February 26, 1639 ), Belvedere (mentioned on March 16, 1707 for the first time ) and Mulino (first mentioned in 1720 ) called. This Borghi, also known as contrada, participated in the 18th century significantly to population and joined later to Selvena.

Attractions

  • Chiesa di San Nicola da Tolentino Church in the town center, which is dedicated to Nicholas of Tolentino and the ( consecrated in 1238 emerged and the Nicholas of Bari) the tasks of the present in the castle of Rocca Silvana Church took over from 1838. Mining

  • Miniera del Morone, mine about 3 km southwest of the village just below the Rocca Silvana at about 500 m at the Fosso della Canala waters at the confluence with the name giver Fossor Morone. The already used by the Etruscans and the Aldobrandeschi mineral resources were only from 1850 onwards further reduced when the company began Modigliani from Livorno with the modern mining industry. Site manager at the time was the Frenchman Alfredo Caillaux, who ( on the eponymous river east of Castell'Azzara ) had already worked for the mines in sluices. However, after three years, the work was discontinued. Not until 1871 was the Count of Santa Fiora, Don Bosio Sforza, the rights to mining in Cellena ( today part of Semproniano ) and Selvena for 99 years to Philipp Schwarzenberg. This was to investigate the events at the German Teodoro main and came to the conclusion in 1882 that would not provide enough material available to the earth. After further research ( 1889 Jasinsky, 1891 and 1907 ) the first mercury was promoted in 1909. 1917, the mine in the possession of the Monte Amiata SA p. AZ. over which the plants already operating at Abbadia San Salvatore and the mining industry in Selvena directed until 1974. Around 1925, reached the three bays of the plant to a depth 482 m. Until 1932, worked through, then the mining reached a crisis. Reopened the work was then 1946. 1974 bought the Società Mercurifera Monte Amiata ( SMMA ), which later became the ENI, the investments and closed it in 1981.

Events

  • Casali Silbina Palio, Palio, which is performed every year on 14 and 15 August 1997 and the three remaining Contraden Molino ( White - Red Badge ), Belvedere ( Silver Black Coat ) and Borghetto (Golden St. Andrew's cross on a blue background) compete against each other.
