Sengiley

Sengilei (Russian Сенгилей ) is a small town in the Ulyanovsk Oblast (Russia) with 6958 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Volga plate about 70 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Ulyanovsk on the right, steep banks of the pent-up to Kuibyshev Reservoir Volga.

Sengilei is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

1666 was the Simbirsk voivode prince Dashkov at the site of the present city Sengilei, in the border area of the former Tsardom Russia, erect a fortress. ( Pokrovsky Russian for Intercession after the name of the church) this resulted in several settlements ( Stanislava sealed Well, Butyrskaya, Wybornaja ), which were combined at the beginning of the 18th century the village Pokrovskoe.

In 1780 the town was made a Sengilei the municipal law, named after the eponymous, near opening into the Volga river (also Sengileika; ersja of - Mordvin sjang lei for tributary). In the 19th century Sengilei center of the grain and flour trade as well as for its apple orchards was known.

Culture and sights

Many buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries were torn down in the 1950s during the flooding of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. However, obtaining some higher-lying buildings from the late 19th century, as Semstwoverwaltung and hospital as well as the former elementary school.

The city has a museum of local history.

Six miles away, in the village Karanino, is the former manor house of the brothers Turgenev - the historian Alexander Turgenev and the economists and publicists Nikolai Turgenev.

In Sengilei several smaller enterprises of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and construction materials, furniture and food industries are located.

In Krasny Guljai in Rajon Sengilei the end of 2007 began the German Henkel Construction Technology GmbH to build a plant.
