Sergei Bortkiewicz

Sergei Bortkiewicz Eduardovich (born 16 Februarjul / February 28 1877greg in Kharkov, .. † October 25, 1952 in Vienna) was a Ukrainian composer.

Career

Bortkiewicz studied from 1896 to 1899 in Saint Petersburg in Karl von Arek and Anatoli Ljadow and then to 1902 in Leipzig by Alfred travel Auer, Karl Piutti and Salomon Jadassohn. From 1904 to 1914 he lived in Berlin, where he taught one year at the Klindworth - Scharwenka Conservatory and from where he undertook concert tours throughout Europe. After the outbreak of the First World War, he returned to Russia.

Before the Russian Revolution, he fled to his estate Artemovka in Kharkov. After plundered by the Red Army, he went to Sevastopol, where he succeeded in 1920 to escape to Istanbul. In 1922 he moved to Vienna. 1928-1933 he lived in Berlin again. After the so-called seizure of power by the National Socialists, he returned to Vienna. He died in Vienna in 1952 and was buried in a grave dedicated to him honorary at Vienna's Central Cemetery (30A -3 -5).

Bortkiewicz composed an opera, two symphonies, three piano, a cello and a violin concerto, a symphonic poem, several suites, a piano and a violin sonata and numerous piano pieces.

Bortkiewicz translated letters of Tchaikovsky to Mrs. von Meck in a selection into German, which were published under the title The strange love Tchaikovsky and Nadezhda von Meck.
