History

During the colonization of the island from the early 15th century, Serra de Água arose. 1676 independent community Serra de Água was created. It belonged to the municipality of Ponta do Sol to belong to the newly created district of Ribeira Brava since 1914.

In 1953 in the municipality of the first hydroelectric power plant on the island.
