Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan District

The Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan District is a district in the southeastern part of the Western Region of Ghana. The district is dominated by the two cities and the twin city Sekondi -Takoradi and is the only urban district dominated the Western Region. Shama Ahanta East is one of three Ghanaian districts with the type designation " Metropolitan " (ie " metropolis dominated "). The name of the district refers to the indigenous people of the Ahanta here. History and Sights

The area of present-day district had very early contact with European traders. Portuguese, Dutch and Brandenburg built here from the early 16th century fortified bases for trade in gold, ivory and slaves. Fort San Sebastian in Shama, Fort Witsten in Takoradi and the two opposing fortresses within sight of Fort Sekondi and Fort Oranje in Sekondi are tourist attractions today.
