Shane Edwin Sutton, OBE, ( born March 22, 1957 in Moree ) is an Australian former racing driver and current British Cycling coach.

Cycling career

1978 Shane Sutton won at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton two medals, gold in the team pursuit, together with Colin Fitzgerald, Kevin Nichols and his brother Gary and silver in the scratch race over ten miles.

From 1980 to 1994 Sutton was active as a professional racing driver. In 1983 he won the Australian Herald Sun Tour and was third in the Australian road championship. In 1984 he went to Britain, won the 1985 Midland 's Tour and launched in 1987 at the Tour de France, but when he had to give up after the 13th stage. In 1990, he won the Milk Race and finished in 1993 at the British Road Championships third place. Sutton also launched in four six-day race, which he won three: In 1982, he won in Launceston with Phil Sawyer, 1983 in Melbourne with his brother Gary and 1984 again in Launceston with Geoff Skaines.

Shutton as coach

After his resignation as a cyclist in 1994 Sutton was Welsh national coach in cycling. In 2002 he joined as a coach to the British Association and managed until early 2013 also the Team Sky.

1998 Sutton was elected in Wales Coach of the Year and 2008 because of the success of its athletes at the Beijing Olympics Coach of the Year in the UK. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire.

In November 2012, he was hit on the bike in Manchester when driving by a car and suffered head injuries, but was able to recover. The doctor told him that his helmet had saved his life. Only a few hours earlier was his longtime protege Bradley Wiggins, on whose successes Sutton large shares are awarded, an accident with the bike.

In the summer of 2013 Shutton was quoted in various British newspapers when he declared, Wiggins was in a crisis, as it had previously been almost run over by his Tour success in the year and now must set new goals.

Sutton is the brother of former racing driver and today's Australian coach Gary Sutton, his nephew is the cyclist Christopher Sutton.
