Shelly Berg

Glen Shelton " Shelly " Berg ( born August 18, 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American jazz pianist, arranger and high school teachers.

Life and work

Shelly 's father was the trumpeter Jay Berg. From six years he had classical piano lessons at the Cleveland Institute of Music. At 15, he moved with his family to Houston, where he among other things, in Sessions played with Arnett Cobb. After earning a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music at the University of Houston School of Music, he worked as a music teacher and next to it lay a number of albums under his own name, which he recorded with musicians such as Peter Erskine and Chuck Berghofer. After his debut album for DMP 1995 he put 1998 Oscar Peterson Tribute ago, in which the trio partner Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen participated. In 2006 he arranged standards for the album Ray Sings, Basie Swings for Concord Jazz. In Los Angeles, he frequently appeared with Bill Watrous and took part in several of his albums such as Bone -ified (1992 ) or Space Available (1995). Berg also served as musical director for Carmen Bradford, as an accompanist for Lorraine Feather, Monica Mancini, Patti Austin, Tierney Sutton and Joli Jones.

Shelly Berg taught first at San Jacinto College in Texas before moving to Los Angeles in 1991 and taught as a professor of jazz studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. In 2007 he was Dean of the Frost School of Music ( University of Miami ). He was also Chairman of the International Association of Jazz Educators.
