Sherrie Maricle

Sharon L. " Sherrie " Maricle ( born September 2, 1963 in Buffalo ) is an American jazz drummer and composer.

Life and work

Maricle, who grew up in Endicott, first learned clarinet and cello before moving to the snare drum. At the age of eleven she attended a concert of Buddy Rich and his Killer Force Orchestra, which set the course for their future lives. She studied up to the Bachelor 1985 at Binghamton University, around 1986 at New York University to do their master. In addition, she studied with Mel Lewis, Adam Nussbaum and Jeff Hamilton. Already during her studies she acted as a professional musician from 1984 to 1987 Slam Stewart; since 1986 it belonged to the Emery Davis Orchestra and 1987 also to Bill Lombardo Orchestra. Between 1987 and 1993, she led the jam sessions in the jazz club the Village Gate; together with Peter Appleyard they had a combo. In the early 1990s, she joined the New York Pops and has performed with Clark Terry and Al Grey. Furthermore, it was musical director for the dancer Maurice Hines. Since 1993, it derives from the drums from the Diva Jazz Orchestra, from which emerged the Diva Jazz Trio and the Quintet Five Play. Furthermore, she appeared in The Velvet Glove, Unpredictable Nature, Oliver Jones Trio and the New Jersey Symphony. Maricle received his doctorate in 2000 on the Concerto pour batterie et petit orchester by Darius Milhaud and a comparable own work. They also composed (even symphonic works for the New York Pops ) and is active as a conductor and teacher at the New York Summer Music Festival.

Prizes and awards

Maricle, was highlighted at the Down Beat polls as a talent that deserves further attention. 1997 and 2000 she was honored as " Teacher of the Year" by the New York University. Nat Hentoff nominated album On the Brink of their band Five Play ' in the Jazz Times as CD of the year 1999. 2009 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.
