Shire of Carpentaria

- 17.733333333333139.53333333333Koordinaten: 17 ° 44 ' S, 139 ° 32' O The Shire of Carpentaria is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland. The area is 64,110 km ² and has about 2100 inhabitants.

Geography

The Shire is located in the north of the state at the southeast end of the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 1640 km north- west of the capital Brisbane.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is Normanton with about 1100 inhabitants. Karumba is with about 500 inhabitants, is the only other major town in the Shire.

History

After the settlement had failed in the meantime in the western Burketown, a settlement and the city Normanton developed in the 60s of the 19th century the Norman River. 1883 was the area a local administration, which in 1903 raised to the Shire.

Management

The Carpentaria Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
