Shire of Etheridge

Geography

The Shire is located in the north of the state in the south of the Cape York Peninsula about 1400 km northeast of the capital Brisbane.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is the city of Georgetown with about 250 inhabitants. Other towns are Abingdon Downs, Conjuboy, Einasleigh, Forsayth, Gilbert River, Gilberton, Mount Surprise and Strathmore.

History

In 1870 was in the field, the settlement Etheridge, which was renamed in 1872 in Georgetown. But the name stuck as the name of the Etheridge River. 1879 was the region local self-government under the name Einasleigh division after another town in the area. Since Georgetown was the administration, led to confusion with the delivery of mail. Therefore, the LGA 1919 was renamed in Etheridge Shire.

Management

The Cook Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
