Georgetown (Queensland)

Georgetown is a small town in the north of the Australian state of Queensland.

The Etheridge River flows through the city. It lies on the Savannah Way (also: Gulf Developmental Road), which it crosses from west to east. To the south the Forsayth Road branches off an Outback Trail, which leads to Forsayth Range and on through the Newcastle to Einasleigh. Cairns is located 412 km east and 301 km west of Normanton.

Management

Georgetown in the region of Far North Queensland is the capital of the Etheridge Shire Local Government Area, which also includes the towns of Mount Surprise, Einasleigh Forsayth and belong. At the 2006 census, the city had 254 inhabitants.

History and Economics

The Etheridge River experienced in the 1870 Jahen a gold rush and the town of Georgetown was established there, where it was mined for gold. Originally the town was named Etheridge, but in 1871 they were named in honor of local gold commissioner, Howard St. George, in George Town has to offer.

In 1900 released the livestock industry in the region already have the gold mining industry as the most important from.
