Shire of Flinders (Queensland)

Geography

The Shire is located in the northern half of the state about 1160 km north- west of the capital Brisbane.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is the city Hughenden with about 1150 inhabitants. Other towns are Dutton River, Porcupine, Prairie, Stamford, Tangorin and Torrens Creek.

History

Queensland's longest river, which flows through the Shire, is named after the explorer Matthew Flinders. From 1863 the fertile region was settled in 1882 and a local administration was installed in Hughenden. 1887 town and surrounding areas were separated, and in 1915 the area in Richmondshire and Flinders Shire was divided. Since 1958 Hughenden heard as the administrative headquarters back to Flinders.

Management

The Flinders Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
