Hughenden, Queensland

Hughenden is a small town in Queensland, Australia. Hughenden is located about 1440 kilometers northwest of the capital Brisbane, about 380 kilometers west of Townsville and 520 kilometers east of Mount Isa. It is the seat of the local government area ( LGA) Flinders Shire Council.

Hughenden is located on the banks of the Flinders River and is the administrative center of the Flinders Shire. The town of Hughenden has about 1100 inhabitants, in the entire Shire live about 1300 people. In the city meet the Flinders Highway, which leads into the east-west direction from Townsville to Cloncurry and the Kennedy Developmental Road, which leads into a north-south direction from Cairns to Winton, each other.

Hughenden is named after the first settlers of the area. These named the place after Hughenden Manor, a castle in England and residence of former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

The area around Hughenden is characterized by large farms for cattle and sheep. The number of animals is highly variable, however, since the offer is dependent on feed directly from the annual rainfall. Thus, prolonged periods of drought on the one hand and floods after heavy rainfall on the other hand normally in this area. It is for this reason hardly farming is done except for the livestock sector.

In the center of Hughenden is a replica of a Muttaburrasaurus. A skeleton of this dinosaur was found in 1963 Muttaburra south of Hughenden. More dinosaur bones and teeth were found in the area around Hughenden. Today in Hughenden an annual festival dinosaurs.
