Shire of Noosa

Noosa Shire ( Shire of Noosa ) was a Local Government Area located about 130 km north of Brisbane in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland. The county encompassed 868.7 square kilometers and existed as a local government area from 1910 to 2008, when it was merged with the Maroochy Shire and the City of Caloundra on the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

History

The region was originally home to various Aboriginal tribes. These were mainly the Undumbi strain in the south, the Dulingbara strain in the north and the Gabbi Gabbi in the West.

Although initial reports on the region already in the records of Captain Cook's voyages of discovery are to be found in 1770, the settlement did not begin until almost 100 years later. The first settlement was thereby driven by the timber industry, followed by discovery of gold and a gold rush in the Gympie region, north of Noosa. Here, the complex transport of goods was particularly to and from the region, a problem that has hindered the development of a long time.

1871 a harbor was built in Tewantin. Until 1877 to develop two hotels, a school, a police station and a telegraph station.

In the last 50 years Noosa has evolved from an isolated village that lives on fishing, a popular tourist destination. Nevertheless, the region is still known for its cautious approach to nature. So there are no high buildings and much jungle. 34.8 % of the region as National Parks, Conservation Parks, State Forests or protected in some other form.

Administrative structure

The administration was headed by an elected mayor and nine councilors.
