As siege of Autun a battle between Romans and Alamanni is referred to the year 356.

Prehistory

The Roman commander Julian had traveled in winter 355 from Italy to the north, and encamped with his army in the area around Vienne. Due to the bad weather conditions and the harsh winter, he decided with his campaign against the Alemanni to wait until the summer.

An army of the Alemanni took advantage of this hesitation and attacked the not far distant Roman town of Autun on. The city wall was in poor condition and many of the sections of the wall were already expired, very hard, it enabled the garrison to push back the invading Germanic tribes in the long run. They therefore sent messengers to Julian.

Course

When Julian received the news of the siege, he was initially very surprised since he had not expected as far south of the settlements of the Germans with an attack. He responded immediately, however, and came with his army on 21 June 356 in Autun. There he defeated the Alamanni army, because of the Roman superiority gave up the siege soon. The battle was decided so.
