The Siege of Senonae was a battle between Roman troops under Julian and Alamanni in 356 It ended with a victory for the Romans.

Prehistory

After the battle of Brumath broke out in 356 of the winter in Gaul, so that the Roman commander Julian had to find a winter home for himself and his soldiers. He chose the nearby town Senonae (whose identification is uncertain ). Due to the low food supply within the city the Roman commander had split his army and bring in the surrounding settlements.

This moment took the Alemanni, who had heard of the division of the Roman army, and moved in the autumn of 356 a ring around the city Senonae.

Course

Julian had planned for such an emergency and can already bring into the city enough food to feed its garrison for a few months can. But he had too few troops in the city, that he could venture a failure. He let penetrate messengers of the night through the enemy lines and they send messages to each Roman troops outside the city. But this offered little to no help at. Especially the Heermeister Marcellus sent despite two request for support no soldiers to Senonae. The reason for this was probably the envy of General of the success of Julian; so Julian had to endure with the garrison. There were some skirmishes on the city wall, but remained without great success on both sides. After the harsh winter months, the poorly organized Alemanni had to break the siege due to lack of food and retreat to the north. So Julian had decided the siege itself.

Follow

The displeasure of the Roman officers outside the city let Julian punish draconian. Marcellus has also been suspended from duty. The Roman army was able to make all preparations for the continued campaign of the city Senonae.
