Siemomysł

Siemomysław (also Ziemomysław, Siemomysł; † 960 ) was a prince of the Polans in the 10th century. As the son of Lesteks he was descended from the noble family of the Piast dynasty.

Life

Since Siemomysław is only mentioned in the chronicle of Gallus Anonymus, its existence and reign is controversial since the end of the 19th century. The Chronicles of Gallus Anonymus was also written down since the end of the 14th and 15th centuries.

After a minority opinion in Polish historiography Siemomysław was devised by Gallus Anonymus or one of his oral sources. However, this hypothesis is just as undetectable as the existence Siemomysławs.

According to another view, it is at Lestek actually the father of Mieszko I, especially since this must have had a biological father. Probably the prevailing opinion in the Polish historiography of the 20th century (including Henryk Łowmiański, Gerard Labuda, Kazimierz Jasinski ) holds Siemomysław for a historical ruler of Polans from the early 10th century. In contrast, the names of his wives - maybe it was more because Siemomysław the Slavic " paganism " homage - not known. Possibly also included the daughter of the reigning princes to 944 Vistulans Włodisław it. Partly it was suspected that one of his wives Gorka said. It is not excluded that only Siemomysław and not his father Lestek united the tribes of Polans, Goplanen and Masovians.

Ziemomysław left several children, among the first detectable in Western sources ruler of Poland Mieszko I, his brother Czcibor who fell in the battle of Zehden 972 and a third son, who died around 963/965. It is believed that his daughters were wives of a Pomeranian princes and Gunther of Merseburg. There is disagreement, however, whether his putative descendants Adelajda and Prokuj have existed or whether it was to his children.
