Silurus

European catfish ( Silurus glanis )

Silurus is a genus of fish belonging to the family of the Real catfish ( Siluridae ) within the order of catfish -like ( Siluriformes ). It comes in Eurasia in 16 species.

Features

Species of the genus Silurus have a very small dorsal fin on and an anal fin, which is excreted in the tail end encircling the caudal fin, which at the transition point a clear notch can be seen. The hard ray of the dorsal fin is smooth on the front, rough or sawn and significantly cut on the back in males, whereas in females sawn smooth or only weakly. The barbels on the upper jaw are well developed and extend over the edge of the gill cover also. In the lower jaw there are two or four barbels. The eyes sit on top of the head.

The dorsal fin has a hard and one to six soft rays, the pectoral fins a hard and eight to 16 soft rays, the pelvic fins a hard and six to twelve soft rays and the anal fin 52-88 soft rays.
