Silver Bear for Best Director

The Silver Bear for best director honors at the annual film festival organized by Berlin, the best performance of a director or a director in a competition movie ( feature film ). The award was first presented at the sixth edition of the film festival in 1956. The awarding of the prize agrees the competition jury, which mostly composed of international filmmakers.

Award winners

The most frequently awarded the Director's Award American filmmakers ( 7 wins ), followed by their colleagues from France (7) Italy (6 ) and the UK (5 wins ). Able to triumph three times the Italian Mario Monicelli (1957, 1976 and 1982 ), while the Indian Satyajit Ray (1964 and 1965 ) and Spaniard Carlos Saura (1966 and 1968 ) were washed twice successfully. As the only film director from Denmark Astrid Henning -Jensen received the 1979 award for her drama winter children.

Directors from the German cinema were in 1961, 1990, 2005, 2011 and 2012 successfully, as Bernhard Wicki (The Miracle of Malachi ), Michael Verhoeven ( The Nasty Girl ), Marc Rothemund ( Sophie Scholl - The Final Days ), Ulrich Köhler ( sleeping sickness ) and Christian Petzold (Barbara ) were able to prevail against the competition.
