At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980, he was the big favorite, as some of its strongest competitors were missing because of the boycott of many Western countries. About 100 meters he ran concurrently with Allan Wells in 10.25 s, and only the evaluation of the target photos revealed that the Briton had won the race and the Cubans had to be content with the silver medal. About 200 m Leonard finished fourth and missed with only 0.01 s behind the Jamaican Donald Quarrie the bronze medal. In the 4 x 100 - meter relay, he left with the Cuban team in the lead.
