Simo Lampinen

Simo Lampinen ( born June 22, 1943 in Porvoo ) is a Finnish former rally driver.

Even just after he got his driver's license at age 17, the rally career by Simo Lampinen began. At the age of 20 he won his first major international rally when he takes on a Saab 93 Sport was victorious at the 1000 Lakes Rally in 1963. In the same year he won the overall title of the Finnish Rally Championship and was able to repeat this success a year later.

In the 1960s, Lampinen was factory driver at Saab and won with the 96 1000 Lakes Rally twice more (1964 and 1972). With its success in the RAC Rally in 1968, the Rally of Portugal in 1970 and the Morocco Rally 1972 he won three more World Rally Championship races.

By 1979, Lampinen was active as a driver and was a pilot in the works teams of Lancia, Peugeot and Triumph. After the end of his active career, he was for many years Clerk of the Course at the 1000 Lakes Rally and racing instructor at Saab.

Once was Lampinen also in the 24- hour race at Le Mans at the start. In 1965 he drove a Triumph Spitfire with the Swiss Jean -Jacques Thun to the 13th place of the overall standings.
