Sint Maartensdijk

Sint Maartensdijk ( zeeländisch Smerdiek ) is a town with about 3,600 inhabitants (2005 ) within the Dutch municipality of Tholen in Zeeland.

Initially Sint Maartensdijk was a neighborhood on the river Hastee place called Haestinge. 1491 got Sint Maartensdijk city rights, but had no seat in the Staten van Zeeland, which is why the place to the group of Smalstads is expected. In the Middle Ages Sint Maartensdijk was a thriving city. 1434 married Frank here from Borsselen and Jacqueline of Bavaria, Countess of Holland. Your castle on the north side of the village came by inheritance to the House of Orange. It was demolished in 1819.

Sint Maartensdijk is known for its links to the House of Orange. Queen Beatrix has the title of a woman of Sint Maartensdijk. The monumental church house, which was built in 1628 with the financial support of Frederick Henry of Orange, hang portraits of the 17th century the family.

1971 Sint Martensdijk was merged with other places of the municipality of Tholen, but still home to the town hall.
