Sipoo

Sipoo [ sipɔ ː ] ( swedish Sibbo ) is a municipality on the south coast of Finland with 18,751 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). The neighboring municipality of the capital Helsinki is located in the countryside Uusimaa ( until 31 December 2010 in Eastern Uusimaa ) and belongs to the Helsinki region.

Sipoo / Sibbo was once almost entirely Swedish-speaking. Due to the strong influx of people from other parts of the country Sipoo but mostly Finnish speakers since 2003. Today, 58 % of the population speak Finnish and 40% Swedish. The population is concentrated in the population centers Box, Martinkylä / Mårtensby, Söderkulla, Talma / Tallmo, Västerskog and Nikkilä / Nickby. Most residents Sipoos work in Helsinki.

Archaeological finds are in Sipoo already from the Stone and Bronze Ages. In the 11th to 13th century, was at the mouth of Sipoo River a fortress and a market place. Municipal reform in 2009

According to a decision by the Finnish government in early 2009, a 30 km ² area of the southwest Sipoo was against the will of Sipoo extracted and the City of Helsinki slammed.
