The international airport of Mauritius is colloquially known as Plaisance. Its official name is but: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport of Mauritius to the Governor General of Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The airport is located 5 km southwest of the village Mahebourg and 40 km from Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, away. Operating company is the AML.

Plaisance is the hub of Air Mauritius, which has an intercontinental network with connections to Rodrigues, Reunion, Frankfurt, Paris, Sydney and Singapore. The airport of several other airlines fly into, such as Air Austral and Air Madagascar from the neighboring islands, South African Airways from Africa, Air France, British Airways, Condor service, Corsairfly, Edelweiss Air and Compagnia Aerea Livingston from Europe, Dubai based Emirates and Russia's Transaero.

History

The beginnings of the airport are the days of the Second World War when the Royal Air Force there is a 263 hectare area rebuilt to a military airfield. In June 1944, the first plane landed ( a Catalina flying boat) which was launched in Mombasa ( Kenya). As of April 1947 then commercial aviation industry took place regularly, as Air France from here had approached with a Lockheed Super Constellation from destinations in Europe. In July 1952, the same machine Qantas took the island as a stopover in their flights from Sydney to Johannesburg. Mid-1960s, was extended to 2560 meters in order to fly to the island with the Jets can start and runway.
