Sir William Bowman, 1st Baronet

Sir William Bowman ( born July 20 1816 in Nantwich, Cheshire; † 29 March 1892 in Joldwynds near Dorking ) was a British ophthalmologist and anatomist.

Life and work

1837 Bowman left Birmingham to expand his medical education at King's College in London. Here he worked under the physiologist Robert Bentley Todd. At the age of 25 years, Bowman discovered a membrane at the renal corpuscle, which is now called after him as Bowman's capsule. He was able to shed more anatomical structures, which are also now bear his name through consistent involvement of microscopy: the Bowman 's glands in the olfactory mucosa and Bowman's membrane ( inner limiting membrane anterior ) of the cornea of the eye.

In collaboration with Todd Bowman developed the five-volume Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man ( " Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man", 1843-1856 ) and the reference book " Cyclopaedia of Anatomy and Physiology " (1852 ).

From 1844 Bowman practiced as an ophthalmologist at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital ( Moorfields Eye Hospital today ). Between 1848 and 1855 he taught at King 's College. 1880 Bowman founded the Ophthalmological Society (now the Royal College of Ophthalmologists ).

Awards

In 1841 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1842, the Royal Medal awarded him. 1884 Bowman was knighted basis of merit of Queen Victoria.
