Sirk

Sirk (Hungarian Szirk ) is a town in central Slovakia, with 1170 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and is located in Okres Revúca kraj a circle of Banskobystrický.

Geography

The municipality is situated in the highlands Revúcka Highlands (part of the Slovak Ore Mountains ) on the stream Východný Turcianska, one of the tributaries of Turcianska. To the east of the town, the mountain rises Železník (814 m nm). The center is located at an altitude of 361 m nm and is 18 kilometers from Revúca and 33 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota located ( road distance ).

Administratively divided the community into districts Červeňany, Sirk and Železník.

History

The village was mentioned for the first time in 1421 as Chyrk writing and was initially a mixed settlement of loggers and miners. Even then, the local iron ore reserves were promoted. In the period 1440-1465 the Hussites, who controlled the nearby castle Muráň were present. 1555-1566, the town was sacked and burned by the Turks. Like the entire manor of Castle Muráň changed Sirk owner how Roth Valley, Széchy, Csáky and finally Sturmann. Yet 1720 was Sirk with 14 families, only a small place, but then began the development of mining and metallurgy. In the second half of the 19th century the mining reached its peak, with major iron ore mines, furnaces and associated settlement on the hillside of Železník, mostly in the hands of Rimamurány Society. 1902 or magnesite was discovered, but had promoted only in short periods of time. By the end of the First World War and disintegration of Austria - Hungary existed in the mines many strikes against exploitation by supervisors. Despite developed infrastructure of the whole complex was decommissioned in 1965.
