Sivriada

Sivriada ( Turkish for top island), (Greek: Ὀξεία / Oχeia ) is an island of the Princes' Islands in Istanbul and belongs to the district Adalar.

History

Sivirada was used by clergy of the Byzantine Empire often as peaceful retreat from the nearby capital. However, the island was also a prison for known leader of riots and revolutions. So Plato Sakkoudion on command Nicephorus I was banished to a monastery on the island, as he had his nephew Bardanes Turcos supported. Other well-known, involuntary inhabitants of the island were Basil Sclerosis, Nikephoritzes ( Influential official Michael VII ), John of Constantinople Opel and the Patriarch Michael II of Constantinople Opel. The graves of the dead on the island can be visited.

1911 ordered the mayor of Constantinople Opel that all stray dogs in the city should be spent on the island. When the dogs were already unloaded on the island, there was an earthquake, which was seen as a divine sign. So actually moribund animals were brought back to Constantinople Opel.

Today the island is a popular tourist destination. You can still view the remains of a Roman settlement, a church, a chapel for Martyrs and the cistern in the middle of the island.
