Skolkovo, Moscow Oblast

Skolkovo (Russian Сколково ) is a village in the Moscow Oblast (Russia) with 365 inhabitants.

The place was known primarily through the planned there Skolkovo innovation center to be built in 2015 or later, following the example of the U.S. Silicon Valley.

Geography and transport

Skolkovo is located approximately 20 km west of the center of Moscow and two kilometers outside of Moscow outer ring road, which coincides in this area with the city limits of Moscow. Administratively, Skolkovo is part of the municipality Nowoiwanowskoje gorodskoje posselenije in the district ( raion ) Odintsovo. Its administrative center, the city Odintsovo, located about six miles as the crow flies west of Skolkovo.

Immediately at Skolkovo bordering the villages Nemtschinowo, Marfino and Saretschje. The first two, together with Skolkovo and two other places the urban district of Nowoiwanowskoje (Russian Новоивановское городское поселение ), while Saretschje is a separate urban district.

The main street is the Skolkovo highway Skolkower Chaussee ( Сколковское шоссе ), which connects the city with Moscow and has a junction to the motorway ring. Between the metro station Kuntsevskaya one hand and Skolkovo and Nemtschinowo other hand runs regularly the Mosgortrans - 867 bus

History

The village of Skolkovo was first held in the late 16th century, a documentary mention. The place name probably derives from the family name of an early Skolkow local owner. In the same century there was in place a wooden church, dedicated to the Nativity. In the 17th century Skolkovo changed hands several times and counted in 1704, when it belonged to a member of the noble family Menshikov, 25 farms with a total population of 90 souls. Under Menshikov there arose a new wooden church and a manor house in stone.

1765 burned down the Christ - Birth church and was not rebuilt since then. 1890, under the last local owner before the October Revolution in Russia, lived in Skolkovo 202 inhabitants.

In the 1960s, Skolkovo was by expanding the Moscow city limits to the ring road to a nearby suburb of Moscow. In 1965 it became part of the newly founded Rajons Odintsovo, 2005, the county was formed within the Nowoiwanowskoje.

In the 1990s and 2000s emerged in and around Skolkovo numerous villas and apartment houses of the upper class. Currently, Skolkovo is part of the "richer " west of Moscow real estate prices that are to count the nation's most expensive.

Economy

Since early 2010, plans are in place to build an internationally significant research and industrial area in the immediate vicinity of Skolkovo, the concept will be similar to the U.S. Silicon Valley.
