Skopelos (Greek Σκόπελος ( f sg ), cliff ' ) is a Greek island in the Northern Sporades. Together with some surrounding uninhabited islands Skopelos is a municipality in Region of Thessaly.

Location

Skopelos is about 4 km west of Alonissos, 8 km east of Skiathos and 25 km north-east of Euboea. With an area of ​​95.131 km ² Skopelos is the second largest island of the Northern Sporades.

Geography of the island

The island of Skopelos consists of two rock massifs unequal size. A narrow plain that runs from the bay of Skopelos, the main town, south to the Cape Stafilos, separates the two parts. The smaller, eastern part is very steep and inaccessible. The summit of the rock massif called Palouki, the maximum height is 567 m.

The much larger western and northern part has a maximum height of 682 m. The peak is called Delfi. The northeast coast is steep. On the west and south coast there are numerous bays and beaches.

The island is heavily wooded, typical agricultural products are wine and plums.

Places

The main town of Skopelos lies in the southeast of the island, on the north coast. Skopelos is the economic center of the island and the most important port. A good half of the islanders live here. The historic city center is the center of attraction for tourism.

The other major towns are located in the north of the island: Glossa, the second largest city, located in the extreme north, 200 to 250 m above sea level. Loutraki is the port of Glossa and the harbor, bound for ferries from Volos first. ( Palio ) Air is an ancient village in the north, not far from Glossa. Neo Klima ( Elios other name ) was established in 1965 two miles south of air applied to the West Coast after the old place climate was severely damaged by an earthquake.

Otherwise, there are on the island, only small villages and settlements. Panormos is situated on the largest bay on the west coast with extensive beach. Agnondas on the south coast is the third port of the island ( with occasional ferry ). On the road between Agnondas and Panormos are the settlements Alikias, Ditropos and Loutsa, north of it Mortero. 1.5 km west of Agnondas Limnonari situated on a picturesque bay.

In the interior of the island, at a distance 5-6 km from the port of Skopelos, are Pefkias, Diakopi, Ananias, Pyrgos, Karia Karia and Pano. The only place on the steep north-east coast - there is no beach or harbor - is Kalogeros.

Stafylos located on the southeast coast at the end of the level, which leads from the port of Skopelos south and divides the island into two parts. Kambos and Aloupi are settlements in the immediate vicinity of Skopelos.

In the southeastern part of the island, east of the plain between Skopelos and Stafilos, there are no settlements due to the steep terrain and the inaccessible coast.

History

Skopelos is the ancient Peparethos ( Πεπάρηθος ), which was 342 BC destroyed by Philip of Macedon.

Skopelos was the residence of the singer Ivan Rebroff.
