Smail Hamdani

Smail Hamdani (Arabic إسماعيل حمداني, DMG Ismā ʿ īl Hamdani; * 1930 in the region Bordj Bou- Arreridj ) was 1998-1999 Prime Minister of Algeria.

Hamdani already fought in the Algerian war against the colonial rule of the French. After independence in 1962, he was Head of Cabinet of the Provisional Government under Abderrahmane Farès. He was then to 1965, advisor to the Algerian Ambassador to Brussels and then held until 1970, the offices of a spokesman of the Foreign Ministry and senior adviser for the diplomats of the country. From 1970 to 1979 he was Advisor to the President and Secretary General of the unity party FLN. He was then to 1983 presidential adviser for Bendjedid Chadli and served in the following five years as ambassador in Europe (France, Spain and Sweden ).

Once there was massive unrest among the Berbers in June and July 1998, as Berber languages were not recognized as an official language, the head of state needed a new man at the center of government. He appointed therefore Hamdani on 15 December 1998 as the successor of Ahmed Ouyahia as prime minister.

In the presidential elections of 1999 was chosen with a new head of state Abdelaziz Bouteflika. This Hamdani dismissed on 23 December 1999 and replaced him with Ahmed Benbitour.
