Smižany

Smižany ( Schmögen German, Hungarian Szepessümeg - to 1882 Smizsán ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia, near the town Ves.

It is the largest municipality without city status in Slovakia, on the river Hornád on the northern slopes of the Slovak Paradise.

History

The village was mentioned for the first time in 1246 when Micah, then in 1254 a list of the King Bela as Sumugh. The place with mining past ( in the 19th century, there were up to three blast furnaces ) belonged to the League of 24 cities Zipser, later to collar the 11 Zipser cities.

1910 had the place mostly in 1360 Slovak residents and belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in 1918, after which it became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia.

Today, about 10 percent of the inhabitants are Roma.
