Solanum bulbocastanum

Solanum bulbocastanum is a species of the genus of the nightshade (Solanum ).

Description

Vegetative characteristics

Solanum bulbocastanum is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows up to 1 meter high. The stems reach a diameter of 3 to 6 millimeters at the base of the plant. The plant forms from underground tubers. A sympodial unit typically contains three to six leaves. These have sickle-shaped shaped appearance Stipules with a length of 4-16 mm. The leaf blade is odd pinnate, 2 to 17 centimeters long and 0.9 to 7.2 inches wide. The leaf margin is entire or often curved. The shape of the leaf blade is broadly ovate or lanceolate to linear - lanceolate. Forward the sheet ends acute to obtuse, base rounded, cuneate or decurrent on the petiole. It can reach a length between 0.8 and 7 centimeters. Both leaf pages are densely hairy.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are usually located in the upper part of the plant. There are dichasial branched, leafless cymes contract with one or two secondary axes, they contain 5-35 flowers, all of which are fully formed. The peduncle is 0.3 to 4.5 inches long. The flower stalks can reach a length 3-17 mm and are angled between the lower and upper quarter.

The cup is 3 to 8.5 millimeters long and is covered with elongated, pointed, up to 1 mm long lobes. The crown is star-shaped, creamy- white to light yellow and measures 1.3 to 2.1 inches in diameter. Kronzipfel missing, the edges of the crown are flat and not bent to the outside. The anthers are 3 to 3.5 millimeters long, are yellow colored and wedge-shaped. They open via pores at the tips, they often extend into a short, inward slot. The stamens are 1-4 millimeters long. The ovary carries up to a 9 mm long, non-bent stylus, which is about 1.5 to 3 millimeters above the dust bag addition. The scar is spherical.

Fruit and seeds

The fruits are spherical berries with a diameter of 1 to 1.3 centimeters and a light green color. They contain seeds that are ovate, about 2 mm long and when taken out just ripe fruits colored green -and-white. The cell walls of the outer cells of the seed coat are hair -like extended, so that they act as if they were covered with a thick layer of trichomes. If this layer is moist, it is jelly-like. These are hair-like outgrowths from by enzymes at the base of the cells of the seed coat, a honeycomb- like structure can be seen.

Dissemination and locations

The species is distributed from Durango and Nayarit in northwest Mexico to Honduras. It grows at altitudes of 1200-2300 meters between grasses and cacti in tropical deciduous forests, bushes and oak or pine forests, often on flat or dry rocky soils, between rock piles or along fences, rails, and occasionally on agricultural land.
