Sonntagshorn from north

Pd5

The Sonntagshorn is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Alps. About the summit of the mountain, which rises south-southeast of Ruhpolding and south-southwest of Inzell, the border between Germany and Austria, and thus also the border between the state of Bavaria and the province of Salzburg runs. The summit is located exactly at the interface of

The height of the Sonntagshorn after German and Austrian measurement consistent with 1961 m above sea level. NHN or 1961 m above sea level. A. indicated.

The name Sonntagshorn has nothing to do with the day Sunday, but is derived from the sun roof. The summit takes on its south side to the shape of a roof, which is strongly irradiated by the relatively low angle of the sun.

Because the mountain was not accessible by cable cars, it is a worthwhile summit goal, which especially among ski mountaineers in the Chiemgau Alps is popular in winter. A comparatively comfortable ascent is from the south via the Austrian Heutal. The northern rise of the German side is strenuous, but spectacular and performs unsettled nature landscapes, at first over a relatively comfortable forest, then over steep scree and until midsummer into it, even over Altschneefelder. The increase over the middle Kraxenbach demands a little climbing ( Difficulty II) and rockfall risk. The normal route starts from Melleck and performs the Steinbach ditch to the high pastures and finally to the summit.
