South Lakeland

South Lakeland is a District in the county of Cumbria in England, which covers a large part of the landscape of Lake District. Administrative seat is the town of Kendal. Other important towns are Grange-over -Sands, Ulverston and Windermere.

At the foundation of the new county of Cumbria on 1 April 1974 the county from various parts of other counties was assembled. From Westmorland these were the Borough Kendal, the Urban District Windermere, the largest part of the Lakes Urban District and Rural District South Westmorland. The Urban Districts Grange and Ulverston and the Rural District North Lonsdale were separated from Lancashire. Moreover, since also the Sedbergh Rural District of the West Riding of Yorkshire is one of South Lakeland.
