South Wales Railway

The South Wales Railway was a broad gauge railway with gauge of 7 feet 1/4 inch ( 2.140 mm). She married in southern Wales, Gloucester and Forest of Dean Railway with Neyland.

History

The gauge war

In the so -called " gauge war" ( "gauge war" ) the GWR delivered to fierce competition with the London and North Western Railway ( LNWR ). 1846, the Bristol and Gloucester Railway was bought by the Midland Railway and was rebuilt in 1854 on standard gauge. On this route, three-rail tracks were laid on which were trains of both gauges. With its own further Streckenbauten 1849 Plymouth and Penzance in 1867 have been achieved on the southwestern tip of England. The South Wales Railway was opened in 1850 and 1852 also joined by Birmingham, built by Brunel Wye Bridge and in the same year with the Snow Hill station on the GWR. By such assumption and other Streckenbauten the GWR grew into the largest company zoom in southwest England.

Management

The South Wales Railway was entrusted with the operation of the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway, which today is only on small sections in operation: the bankruptcy trustee ended but until 1878 its activities. 1872 the line was converted to standard gauge. Today, operate on a section of track at the Carmathen Gwili Railway and on a section in the Teifi Valley Railway Museum Henllan railway companies.
