Southern Africa
The term Southern Africa refers to the southern part of the African continent. It belongs to the sub-Saharan Africa. The exact delimitation to the north is unclear and is made differently in different subject areas.
In contrast to the North, West, East and Central Africa is not usually meant by a region of South Africa, but the state of South Africa. Therefore, it is called to distinguish the Southern Africa region.

United Nations
The use of the term occurs within the United Nations by no means uniform.
In the United Nations Statistics Division Five countries are listed under the Statistics District Southern Africa:

- South Africa South Africa ( capital Pretoria)
- Swaziland Swaziland ( Mbabane )
These countries also form the Customs Union of Southern Africa (SACU ).
In the area of competence of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights ) is the Southern Africa region composed of 14 states. In his subordinate Regional Office for Southern Africa ( ROSA ) matters in the states of Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland are processed.

Southern African Development Community
Based in Gaborone Southern African Development Community, the Southern African Development Coordinating Conference ( SADCC ) established on April 1, 1980 on the initiative of the frontline states, is an alliance of states, which is regarded by numerous other institutions as " Southern Africa ". The regional differentiation related is widely used in German-speaking countries, for example, in Switzerland the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (SDC ), in Austria at the state Austrian Development Agency (ADA ), and in Germany at the Information Southern Africa (ISSA ) within bread for the World in the Church work on Southern Africa ( KASA ) and in the Southern Africa Initiative of German Business ( FASZ ).

The Zoological Society of Southern Africa ( Zoological Society of Southern Africa) defines the term within their field of activities as the area south of that line, which is given through the course of the rivers Zambezi and Kunene.
