Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra

The SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden -Baden and Freiburg is one of two symphony orchestras of SWR. Since its foundation in 1946, it is known for numerous premieres of new music and is considered one of Germany's best orchestras. Chief Conductor since autumn 2011 François -Xavier Roth. Since 1996 the orchestra has its seat at the Konzerthaus Freiburg.

History

Established on February 1, 1946 in Baden -Baden Philharmonic Orchestra under the name of Südwestfunk it got renamed in the same year in Great Orchestra of Südwestfunk. Under the first chief conductor Hans Rosbaud year 1950 locked with the first appearance at the Donaueschingen Festival of Contemporary art of music, the foundation stone for the present orientation of the orchestra. Since then, the orchestra has premiered about 400 works. In 1966, the orchestra was renamed again in Symphony of the Southwest Radio. In 1996 the company moved from the lying to the Baden-Baden SWF terrain Hans- Rosbaud studio in the larger, newly built Konzerthaus Freiburg. With the merger of SDR and SWF to SWR, the orchestra received its present name in 1998. Since 1949, the orchestra also undertakes regular worldwide concert tours, so it designed to Mozart's 250th birth anniversary on 27 January 2006, the gala concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus. On 1 February 2006 the Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 60th anniversary with a gala concert in the Konzerthaus Freiburg.

On September 28, 2012, the SWR Broadcasting decided to take concrete steps for the merger of the orchestra with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2016Vorlage: to plan future / In 2 years. The job cuts will only be "made by retirements ." The German Orchestra Union demanded about to conclude a collective agreement.

  • 2009: Annual Prize of the German Record Critics' Award for his recording works for orchestra by Olivier Messiaen. Sylvain Cambreling received the ECHO Klassik Conductor of the Year for this recording.
