Spirogyra (Band)

Spirogyra is a British rock band whose music is somewhere between folk and progressive rock. Spyrogira took 1971-1973 on three albums. After a long break the band was revived in the new millennium. Since 2009 reappear new albums.

Band History

Martin Cockerham (vocals / guitar) and Mark Francis (guitar / vocals) formed the duo Spirogyra in the summer of 1967 in Bolton, near Manchester. Without success, they sent demo recordings to the new Apple label.

After several trips to Cockerham wrote in 1969 from the University of Kent in Canterbury one. Here he formed a new version of Spirogyra. The final cast was besides himself from his fellow students Barbara Gaskin (vocals), Steve Borrill (bass) and Julian Cusack (violin). They established soon in the Canterbury scene, and eventually received a recording contract.

In 1971 their first album Radigunds St., named after the street in which they had their dormitory. The second album Old Boot Wine (1972 ) fell from rocking; At this time, the solid base of Spirogyra had shrunk to Cockerham and Gaskin. The third album Bells, Boots and Shambles was released in 1973, and should - apart from various compilations - for more than three decades Spirogyras last album to be. After a final tour of Europe in 1974 parted ways Cockerham and Gaskin.

While Gaskin reported success with Dave Stewart in various projects, Cockerham traveled restlessly about in the world. He lived for a time in Ireland, India, Australia, Bali, California and Hawaii.

In the new millennium, Martin Cockerham returned to England and began with his original partner Mark Francis to work on a Spirogyra comeback. In 2009 they had their new album Children's Earth, followed in 2011 by Spirogyra 5
