Spišská Nová Ves

Ves ( German ( Zipser ) Neu ( en ) dorf, Hungarian IGLO ) is one of the largest cities in eastern Slovakia, southeast of the High Tatras and is located in the traditional region of Spis ( Spis ). The city is the capital of the district.

Known as attractions in the area include the Spis Castle and the Slovak Paradise National Park.

History

The town is an old settlement site ( Neolithic, Great Moravia ). Not later than the 12th century was the Slovak settlement Iglov at the site of the present city. In the 13th century founded in its immediate neighborhood German settlers (known as Saxons ) the village Neudorf. In the second half of the 13th century both settlements are fused. The German majority was replaced in the 19th century by a Slovak.

In the 14th century developed from the settlement of a major city with market law. Since 1380 it is officially mining town. The city had the largest street market in Slovakia. Name

The original settlement was called Slovak iGlow (translated as " needle Hausen ", derived from the narrow form of the settlement ). The neighboring German settlement was called Villa Nova ( 1268, German " Neudorf " - first source document) or ( Hungarian) Igloszasza ( 1279, German " Saxon iGlow ").

After the merger of the two settlements ( 1380 iGlow was alio nomine Nova Villa mentioned) the settlement was in some Latin documents in the 15th century both Neudorf and iGlow (later only Iglovia ), called in Hungarian documents sat derived from Iglov form Iglo by, in the German form Newendorf (later Neudorf, later also Zipser Neudorf ). In Slovak texts a translation of the German name was, at least since the 18th century used (1786 Nowa Wes, German " Neudorf "; since 1920 Ves, German " Zipser Neudorf ").
