SsangYong Rexton (2001-2006)

The SsangYong Rexton is a sport utility vehicle of the South Korean car manufacturer SsangYong. For the design of the Rexton, the company Italdesign was responsible.

Rexton I (2001-2006)

In the summer of 2003, the Rexton was introduced in Europe. Technically it is based on the slightly extended chassis of the SsangYong Musso with ladder frame chassis. Available were initially two engine options: a 2.9 - liter five- cylinder diesel engine with 95PS and a 220 -hp 3.2 -liter gasoline engine. Both engines were acquisitions from Musso and were based on designs from Mercedes -Benz. For diesel, there is a five-cylinder, the Mercedes -Benz OM601, which was used at Mercedes in different models. The engine originally worked with the typical Mercedes prechamber. A developed by SsangYong turbo model increased the output of 70 kW ( 95 hp ) to 88 kW (120 hp). These turbo diesel version disposal continues to have a indirect injection; but she was not the same as developed by Mercedes on an equal basis turbodiesel OM 602 LA version with direct injection. In the petrol engine is the Mercedes -Benz M 104, a six-cylinder with four valves per cylinder. It was used in several Mercedes- Benz cars (E -, S-, G-Class ) and there replaced by the V-6 cylinder M 112 1997. Musso Rexton, Korando, - and also in the limo Chairman: With SsangYong, the engine was installed in all series.

The power transmission takes place in the diesel version either via a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The manual transmission comes from the Mexican company Tremec, the automatic from the Australian supplier BTR Automotive. The petrol version was only available with the automatic.

The all-wheel drive is based on a transfer case from Borg Warner. When diesel was a simple, rigid all-wheel drive to use; road maintenance drove the Rexton with rear wheel drive. When gasoline came a permanent four-wheel drive is used, which was also available on the street. It was the so-called TOD system ( Torque On Demand), which was also used in numerous American SUVs as well as Isuzu. Here divides an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch the front wheels depending on slippage at the wheels a share of the drive torque to.

2004, the model was first revised; The new models were available in Germany since the fall. On the body just little things have changed. Optionally, a new diesel engine was now available. The 2.7-liter five-cylinder engine based on the previous 2.9 -liter engine block of the OM602, but received a reduced cylinder bore, which reduced the displacement to 2696 cc, and a new cylinder head with four valves per cylinder and common-rail direct injection. This engine also was not identical with the similar at first glance Mercedes -2 ,7- liter common- rail turbo diesel engine with the designation OM612, but a proprietary development of SsangYong. This engine was optionally combined with an electronically controlled five-speed automatic. It is the former Mercedes -Benz five-speed automatic. For the first time, ESP also was available, which defused as critical designated driving. The previous 2.9 -liter diesel versions were maintained in parallel, as is the 3.2 -liter gasoline engine.

Rexton II (2006-2012)

The new, square grille quoted appropriate stylistic elements of Mercedes Benz; the other changes were less conspicuous. The fog lights were smaller in size, accounted for the trim strip on the side skirts. The 270 XDi had been revised and made 137 kW ( 186 hp), the abbreviation 270 XVT recognizable. There new injectors, a modified engine electronics, a new variable turbocharger and a larger intercooler were installed. The 120 kW (163 hp) variant remained on offer. In Germany, the gasoline engine and the 2.9L turbo diesel were removed from the program. Was also taken from the price list of permanently usable all-wheel drive; , According to the importer reason were delivery problems due to repeated strikes in South Korea.
