The St. Marys River in the catchment area of ​​the Maumee River

At the confluence with the St. Joseph River, it forms the Maumee River in Fort Wayne, part of the river system of the St. Lawrence River. The catchment area including the two source rivers and numerous tributaries covers 2196 km ² and stretches over a total of seven counties.

The St. Marys River is located 2 km east of the town of St. Marys formed in the western Auglaize County by the confluence of the East Branch and the Center Branch St. Marys River. He turns first to the north, after traveling about 12 km west-north- west and retains this general direction until its confluence with the St. Joseph River. He flows through the counties Auglaize, Mercer and Van Wert, Ohio, as well as the counties Adams and Allen in Indiana.

The catchment area is predominantly used for agricultural purposes. Approximately 84 % are arable land, 7% is forest or wetland and the remaining 7 % are urbanized or otherwise used. The largest cities are Fort Wayne and Decatur, Indiana, and Celina and St. Marys, Ohio. The population in the catchment area of around 770,000 people.
