Celina is a city in Mercer County in the western part of the American state of Ohio, about halfway between Cincinnati and Toledo. Celina is situated on the western shore of Grand Lake St. Marys, a 55 -acre man-made lake, about half as large as the Müritz in Germany. Celina has some 10,000 inhabitants (as of 2000 census ) and is the seat of government ( county seat ) of Mercer County.

The nearest airport ( Lakefield Airport, ICAO code KCQA ) is 10 km from Celina, and is primarily used by private aircraft and charter flights.

History

Celina was founded in 1834 inside dense forests. Soon sawmills were built, which attracted workers. A remarkable increase in the population experienced the place in the 1880s, as oil and gas deposits were discovered in the area. The manufacture of furniture was another important industry quickly. This constant up to the middle of the 20th century way. The largest furniture company on site for Mersman Brothers Company, which was the market leader for the production of tables in the United States in the Great Depression.

The historic city center was included as Celina Main Street Commercial Historic District 1982 in the National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP) and are thus protected monument.

Education

Opened in 1962, in Celina, the Western Ohio Educational Foundation in cooperation with the Ohio Northern University college. In 1969, the college the cooperation partner, and since then belongs to the Wright State University ( WSU ), whose headquarters are in Dayton. On the campus of WSU in Celina ( Lake Campus ) studying about 1,000 students.
