The State University of Music and Performing Arts is a state college of music and drama school based in Stuttgart. It counts with the founding in 1857 of the oldest music schools in Germany.

History

The institution was founded in 1857 as " Stuttgart Music School " by Sigmund Lebert, Immanuel Faisst, Wilhelm Speidel and Ludwig Stark, but already in 1865 renamed the " Conservatory of Music ". From 1869 it was called "Royal Conservatory of Music " and in 1921 - after the introduction of the Republic - " Württemberg Academy of Music".

Already in the 19th century pianist own school was formed in Stuttgart based on a then much- used textbook Stuttgart Conservatory teacher out ( Lebert / Stark: Great practical- theoretical piano school). In the first decades of the 20th century were two well-known pianist directors of this institution, namely Max Pauer ( 1907-1924 ) and Wilhelm Kempff ( 1924-1929 ). 1938, under the directorship of the violinist Carl Wendling ( 1929-1940 ), was nationalized the college and thus made ​​financially on a permanent secure base.

During the Second World War, the building was the " University of Music " severely damaged and the school system for a year outsourced to Trossingen, where they found refuge with the support of the Hohner company until 1946. In the very early in the 19th century, the Stuttgart Conservatory was also a training ground for actors, but only in 1942 her own acting school was founded. It was therefore only logical that the university received its present name " University of Music and Performing Arts " in 1963. The traditionally very strong field of church music was further expanded under the director Hermann Keller (1946-1952); with a total of eleven organs include the university today to the best equipped for church music and the concert organ music academies in Germany. Structure and equipment

In 2003, the university, the doctoral and habilitation degrees in Musicology and Music Education. Since 2005 she has organized in four faculties and eleven institutes. The conversion to the Bachelor-Master structure took place in 2008.

For commercial tasks, such as performing artists, the settlement of the training opportunities and the ticket sales since 2006 is a limited liability company as a subsidiary available. A 2010 founded Career Services assists students and graduates make the transition from school to work.

Since 1989, an electronic studio Furthermore offers the possibility of experimental music outside traditional musical instruments to develop and to provide pedagogical and didactic. For university's own productions and also for students is a recording studio available.

The library contains nearly 130,000 media ( books, scores and recordings ) and is also open to external users. The borrowing remains, however, members of the university reserved.

The Music Academy has three concert halls: the Concert Hall in the tower (500 seats), the Chamber Music Hall (180 seats) and the orchestra rehearsal room (99 places). With approximately 450 events per year and about 85,000 visitors, it is an important cultural organizations in the region. More about 100 concerts and theater events are shown in the Wilhelma Theater.

The Bachelor Degree is an 8 semester comprehensive undergraduate degree, divided in the basic course ( semester 1-4) and graduate ( semester 5-8). In the field of music can be studied (except accordion), vocals, orchestral conducting, choir conducting, composition, music theory, elementary music education, jazz and pop all instrumental subjects. The College of Music is the only nationwide, which offers the professional figure theater (but only as a bachelor ). Cooperations

An extension of the study on the cooperation programs of the conservatoire is possible. Primarily this includes the RSO Orchestra Academy ( a partnership with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart of the SWR ), the Opera Studio ( a collaboration with the Stuttgart State Opera ) and the spectacle studio ( a partnership with the spectacle of four State and Regional Theatre of Baden- Württemberg). The collaborations are primarily designed to enable students to close to practice and prepare them for the period of candidature for the future workplace.
